19th AFFA Annual General Meeting

Successfully Conducted in Viet Nam

On 12 and 13 the Annual General Meeting of the ASEAN Freight Forwarders Associations was successfully conducted in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, under the chairmanship of Mr. Masli Mulia, chairment of AFFA.

The conference was organised under the responsibility of VIFFAS and the participants were gracefully welcomed by Mr. Bui Ngoc Loan, President of VIFFAS and the official opening speech was delivered by Mr. Le Danh Vinh, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

Nine out of the ten AFFA member countries attended this conference. Only the Lao International Freight Forwarders Association (LIFFA) could not join. AFFA was fortunate that three invited guests also were able to join the conference: Mr. Ngyen Cong Bang, representing the Ministry of Transport of Viet Nam, Mr. Yasu Tomita, President of the Japan Federation of Freight Forwarders, and Mr. Thomas Gutruf of Aktive Insurance.

Chairing the AGM

The AGM was preceded by the annual meeting of the AFFA Working Group on Education and Training (WGET), chaired by Mr. Thomas Sim from Singapore. The WGET is one of the most important working groups within AFFA because it deals directly with the development of human resources in the industry. Besides participating in the government planning of training activities on the ASEAN level, WGET also strongly emphasis the exchange of experiences and training materials for which can be used by each of the National Associations for their own training materials. This is a matter of utmost importance in view of the repid developments in the industry.

Other working groups within AFFA are: the Liability Insurance working group, Chaired by Malaysia, the Trade FacilitatiChairman of Viffason working group chaired by Thailand, and the Multi-Modal Transport Operator (MTO) working group chaired by Vietnam. At the end of the AGM meeting is was agreed that the next meeting will be held in Thailand 9-10 October 2010, in conjunction with the FIATA World Congress.
